I actually think it IS a good idea to have your dog restrained somehow while riding in the car.  We have ALL at some point, had to stop short for an animal that runs out in front of us, or maybe the person in front of us decides he needed a donut and was almost past the driveway for Dunkin Donuts.  Think about what would happen to your dog if not restrained somehow.  He/she would become a projectile and that would be a horrible if not deadly situation.
